History

Founded by the Romans as a fort in AD 79, Chester has had a long a vibrant history. The Roman fort was known as Deva Victrix, getting its name from the River Dee which passed around it.

Evidence shows the fort was 20% larger than those built around the same time in Britain, leading people to believe it was destined to become the capital, instead of London!
